Laying hens

 

Starting 9 years ago we decided to create a free range, certified organic, laying hen production unit.  It has proven to be an excellent way to maximise return on a small acreage and has grown from 500 to 4000 birds housed in five flocks.  Run as a separate company (Rotoiti Eggs Ltd) it operates on a full time basis and is (mostly) easy to operate.  A permanent contract with a marketing company (Eco Eggs Ltd) assures consistent income on a month by month basis.  Currently we produce approx 15% of all the organic eggs sold in New Zealand.
