Laying hens

 

Starting 9 years ago we decided to create a free range, certified organic, laying hen production unit.  It has proven to be an excellent way to maximise return on a small acreage and had grown from 500 to 4000 birds housed in five sheds.  Run as a separate company it operates on a part time basis and is easy to operate.  A permanent contract with a marketing company (Eco Eggs Ltd) assured consistent income on a month by month basis.  We produced approx 15% of all the organic eggs sold in New Zealand.
